JST right now

JST is Japan Standard Time, nine hours ahead of UTC. A single time applies to the whole country, from Hokkaido to Okinawa, and Japan has no daylight saving. It also happens to be the offset of South Korea.

Japan had a short daylight saving trial during the post-war occupation, from 1948 to 1951, and has not used it since. Debates reappear every few years, notably around the 2020 Olympics, but no change has been made.

When this page was last built (Friday, November 6, 2026, 12:00 UTC) it was 9:00 PM on Friday in Japan Standard Time. The offset for JST is UTC+9. The live clock above takes over as soon as the page loads and shows the exact current time.

Daylight saving. Japan Standard Time never observes daylight saving time, so the offset stays UTC+9 every day of the year and no clock change is coming in 2026 or 2027.

Where JST is used

JST is used in Japan, and the same offset is used under other names in Korea and eastern Indonesia.

  • Tokyo
  • Osaka
  • Yokohama
  • Nagoya
  • Sapporo
  • Fukuoka
  • Kyoto
  • Kobe
  • Seoul
  • Busan
  • Sendai

South Korea and North Korea use UTC+9 as Korea Standard Time (KST). Eastern Indonesia (WIT) and Palau are also UTC+9, so a call with Seoul uses the same clock as Tokyo.

What JST means for business and fans

Japan opens the world’s trading day for equities in practice. The Tokyo Stock Exchange runs from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM JST, with a lunch break, which is midnight to 6:30 AM UTC. A US trader sees it close at 1:30 AM Eastern in winter.

For India the gap is 3 hours 30 minutes: Japan is ahead, so a 10 AM JST call is 6:30 AM in Delhi. For the US, Tokyo is 14 hours ahead of New York in winter and 13 in summer. The only overlap is the American evening and the Japanese morning, which suits a 7 PM New York call at 9 AM next day in Tokyo.

Game and anime releases frequently state JST first. A launch at midnight JST is 10 AM EST the previous day, and a Friday 8 PM JST broadcast is 6:00 AM EST on Friday. Fans abroad often miss the date change: the same event can be Thursday evening in America and Friday evening in Japan.

JST compared with eight other zones

Figures are calculated for Nov 6, 2026 using UTC+9 for JST. For example, 9:00 AM JST = 5:30 AM IST. Zones that change their clocks will show a different gap after their next switch.

ZoneOffset on Nov 6, 2026DifferenceExample
IST (India)UTC+5:30IST is 3 hours 30 minutes behind JST9:00 AM JST = 5:30 AM IST
GMT (London)UTC+0GMT is 9 hours behind JST9:00 AM JST = 12:00 AM GMT
CET (Paris)UTC+1CET is 8 hours behind JST9:00 AM JST = 1:00 AM CET
UTCUTC+0UTC is 9 hours behind JST9:00 AM JST = 12:00 AM UTC
PST (Los Angeles)UTC−8PST is 17 hours behind JST9:00 AM JST = 4:00 PM PST previous day
CST (Chicago)UTC−6CST is 15 hours behind JST9:00 AM JST = 6:00 PM CST previous day
AEDT (Sydney)UTC+11AEDT is 2 hours ahead of JST9:00 AM JST = 11:00 AM AEDT
EST (New York)UTC−5EST is 14 hours behind JST9:00 AM JST = 7:00 PM EST previous day

“next day” and “previous day” mean the other zone is on a different calendar date from JST at that moment.

JST, KST and the date line

Japan and South Korea use the same offset but different abbreviations: JST in Japan and KST in Korea. They show the same time, so for conversion purposes you can use either one.

JST has no summer variant, so there is no “JDT”. If you find that abbreviation in a document it is either a typo or refers to wartime Japanese occupation zones.

Because JST is far east of the Americas, date mistakes are common. Always write the date next to the time when scheduling with Tokyo: “Thursday 8 PM EST” and “Friday 10 AM JST” are the same moment.
