Using EDT for planning
The most common reason to look up EDT is a time that was written months ago. A conference starting at “9 AM EDT” on a June day means 9 AM on a New York wall clock, 2 PM in London, 3 PM in Paris and 6:30 PM in India. Because EDT is a summer-only label, any event with it in the name belongs to the warm half of the year.
For India-based staff the gap during EDT is the smallest of the year: 9 hours 30 minutes. A 9 AM New York call is 6:30 PM in Delhi, a reasonable time for an evening meeting. In winter the same call falls at 7:30 PM.
Markets keep to wall-clock time, not to offsets. The NYSE and Nasdaq still open at 9:30 AM New York time, which is 13:30 UTC in summer and 14:30 UTC in winter. If your software logs in UTC, remember that the same trading hours move by an hour on the clock change.

EDT versus EST, ET and the Australian EDT
EDT always means summer in the eastern US. EST means winter. ET is the collective term for either. A tool that asks you to choose between EDT and EST is asking which half of the year the date falls in, not which city you are in.
Daylight time in Australia is written AEDT, with the extra A, but older emails and some regional timetables still say “EDT” for Sydney in summer. That is UTC+11, fifteen hours away from American EDT. The context almost always settles it; when it does not, ask.
When you see “EDT” on a date between November and March, treat it as a mistake. Look for the intended city instead of the label, or re-check the date. The correct winter label for New York is EST.
