UTC right now

UTC, Coordinated Universal Time, is the reference all civil time is measured against. Zone offsets such as UTC+5:30 and UTC−8 are the number of hours and minutes that must be added to UTC to get the local time.

It is not a time zone in the political sense. No country sets its clocks to UTC and then changes them: UTC never has daylight saving, never skips a day, and is the same everywhere on Earth at the same instant. Aviation calls it Zulu time, and servers, satellites and logs use it so that events can be compared without conversion.

When this page was last built (Friday, November 6, 2026, 12:00 UTC) it was 12:00 PM on Friday in Coordinated Universal Time. The offset for UTC is UTC+0. The live clock above takes over as soon as the page loads and shows the exact current time.

Daylight saving. Coordinated Universal Time never observes daylight saving time, so the offset stays UTC+0 every day of the year and no clock change is coming in 2026 or 2027.

Where UTC is used

UTC itself is used by systems, not by countries, though a few places use it as their local time.

  • Reykjavík
  • Accra
  • Dakar
  • Abidjan
  • Bamako
  • Monrovia
  • Freetown
  • Ouagadougou
  • Nouakchott
  • Lomé

Iceland and most of West Africa follow UTC+0 all year, so their wall clocks equal UTC. London and Lisbon match it only in winter and move to UTC+1 for summer time.

Why professionals use UTC

Distributed teams use UTC because it removes the daylight saving problem. A deploy window of “14:00 UTC” means the same moment in every city, even though the local reading changes when a country moves its clocks. That is why status pages, release notes and incident reports are normally in UTC.

Developers store timestamps in UTC and convert at the edge. A database column in local time drifts by an hour twice a year and cannot represent the repeated hour in autumn; a UTC column has none of these faults. The usual rule is to store UTC, compute in UTC, and display in the reader’s local time.

Events that straddle many time zones, such as online conferences, game launches and token sales, state a UTC time and let each reader do the sum. If you know your own offset, you only need to add or subtract it. Delhi is UTC+5:30, Tokyo UTC+9, New York UTC−5 in winter, Los Angeles UTC−8.

UTC compared with eight other zones

Figures are calculated for Nov 6, 2026 using UTC+0 for UTC. For example, 9:00 AM UTC = 2:30 PM IST. Zones that change their clocks will show a different gap after their next switch.

ZoneOffset on Nov 6, 2026DifferenceExample
IST (India)UTC+5:30IST is 5 hours 30 minutes ahead of UTC9:00 AM UTC = 2:30 PM IST
GMT (London)UTC+0UTC and GMT show the same time9:00 AM UTC = 9:00 AM GMT
CET (Paris)UTC+1CET is 1 hour ahead of UTC9:00 AM UTC = 10:00 AM CET
PST (Los Angeles)UTC−8PST is 8 hours behind UTC9:00 AM UTC = 1:00 AM PST
CST (Chicago)UTC−6CST is 6 hours behind UTC9:00 AM UTC = 3:00 AM CST
JST (Tokyo)UTC+9JST is 9 hours ahead of UTC9:00 AM UTC = 6:00 PM JST
AEDT (Sydney)UTC+11AEDT is 11 hours ahead of UTC9:00 AM UTC = 8:00 PM AEDT
EST (New York)UTC−5EST is 5 hours behind UTC9:00 AM UTC = 4:00 AM EST

“next day” and “previous day” mean the other zone is on a different calendar date from UTC at that moment.

UTC, GMT and Zulu

In daily use UTC and GMT show the same time. Technically GMT is a time zone (the UK in winter), whereas UTC is a standard maintained with atomic clocks and adjusted by leap seconds. The two never differ by more than a second.

“Z” at the end of a timestamp, as in 2026-11-06T12:00:00Z, means UTC. Pilots and the military say “Zulu”. You may also see “UT”, “UT1” or “Etc/UTC”, which all mean practically the same reference for ordinary purposes.

The abbreviation is a compromise: English speakers wanted CUT and French speakers wanted TUC, and the official form UTC fits neither. It is not a typo.

UTC questions answered

What time is it in UTC right now?

The clock at the top shows the exact UTC time. It has no seasonal changes: UTC stays the same all year.

Is UTC the same as GMT?

For everyday purposes, yes. GMT is the winter time of the UK and some other countries. UTC is the global reference they follow.

What does UTC+5:30 mean?

It means the local time is 5 hours 30 minutes ahead of UTC. That is the offset of India, so 12:00 UTC is 17:30 IST.

Does UTC have daylight saving?

No. UTC never changes. Countries that use daylight saving change their offset from UTC instead.

Why do programmers use UTC?

Because it is unambiguous and monotonic. A UTC timestamp identifies one instant exactly, whereas a local timestamp may repeat or not exist when clocks change.
