CET right now

CET is Central European Time, one hour ahead of UTC. It is the winter clock of Paris, Berlin, Rome, Madrid, Amsterdam, Brussels, Vienna, Warsaw and a large number of other European capitals.

In summer these countries move to Central European Summer Time (CEST, UTC+2) on the last Sunday of March, and back to CET on the last Sunday of October. The EU has debated ending the change for years, but the rule still applies.

Tunisia and Algeria use UTC+1 all year, called CET locally. Spain is on CET although most of it is geographically west of the Greenwich meridian.

Working with Central European Time

CET is the main clock of the EU single market. European exchanges such as Euronext, Deutsche Börse and SIX open at 9:00 AM CET and close at 5:30 PM, so a trader in New York sees the opening bell at 3:00 AM EST. Pre-market activity in the US overlaps the European afternoon.

For India the gap is 4 hours 30 minutes in winter and 3 hours 30 minutes in summer. A 10 AM CET call is 2:30 PM in Delhi in winter. Many Indian IT teams working with German or French clients arrange their shifts around that early afternoon overlap.

The US-Europe gap has a quirk. Europe changes on the last Sunday of March, the US on the second Sunday, so for about two to three weeks the gap between New York and Paris is five hours instead of six. A call that was 3 PM CET last week suddenly lands at 10 AM instead of 9 AM in New York.

“next day” and “previous day” mean the other zone is on a different calendar date from CET at that moment.

CET, CEST and the other Europes

CET is the winter form and CEST the summer form. When people say “CET” for a July event they usually mean “European time”; strictly it is CEST, UTC+2. Calendars that store the zone as Europe/Berlin or Europe/Paris get this right automatically.

Do not confuse CET with EET (Eastern European Time, UTC+2) or WET (Western European Time, UTC+0). Helsinki, Athens, Bucharest and Kyiv are on EET, one hour ahead of Berlin. London, Lisbon and Dublin are on WET or GMT, one hour behind.

The letter C also appears in CST and CT, American Central Time. CET and CST are unrelated and are seven hours apart in winter.
